AI tools for podcast and talking-head video

A workflow view, not a ranking

If your content is mostly speech, three jobs come up over and over: turning the recording into a clean edit, getting a usable voice when you cannot record, and researching the episode before you write it. These are the entries on this site that cover those jobs, and what each one is actually for.

This is not a ranked list and there is no "best" pick. Each tool below solves a different job; the useful question is which job is currently eating your week.

The jobs, and what covers them

Cutting the long recording

Descript — Edits by deleting transcript text instead of scrubbing a timeline, with filler-word removal and audio clean-up built in.

What it is bad at: Struggles with complex multicam or motion-graphics work, and transcription accuracy drops with heavy accents or crosstalk.

Getting shorts out of an existing back catalogue

Opus Clip — Produces a batch of vertical clips from one long video, with auto-reframing and captions.

What it is bad at: Hook selection still needs a human pass, and its affiliate terms note that an account with no traffic for six months gets deactivated.

A consistent narration voice

ElevenLabs — The reference point for AI voiceover quality, with voice cloning and a stable API for batch narration.

What it is bad at: Character credits disappear fast on long scripts, and cloned voices still mispronounce names and technical terms.

Researching the episode before you write it

Perplexity — Answers with inline citations, so you can check the claim rather than just the answer.

What it is bad at: Still hallucinates occasionally and is weak on niche primary sources behind paywalls — open every citation you plan to say on camera.

Keeping the pipeline from living in your head

Notion — One database covering idea to script to shot to published, so nothing sits in a notebook.

What it is bad at: The AI add-on is priced separately from the workspace, and it is easy to spend a weekend building a system instead of making the episode.

What this page is not

This is not a ranked list, and there is no "best" pick. Every entry linked above carries its own sourced facts, its own list of unverified items, and its own last-checked date.

None of these tools has been tested hands-on by us, so none carries a star rating. Every price on the individual entries is a US logged-out reference price; logged-in and non-US pricing is unverified. Each entry also lists what we could not confirm.
